6 More Days...No, Wait...FIVE MORE WEEKS!! - Tuesday, October 9, 2007

ARGHHHHH!!!

We went to the house after work on Tuesday and found that Lyle the Contractor was there. We talked to him for a bit and we were told first of all that we wouldn't be able to install the hardwood floors this weekend (October 13th) because the humidity was still too high. I asked him the question I've been dying to know, and he kinda danced around actually giving us a date, but said that it would be another FIVE WEEKS!! That was NOT what I wanted to hear. That brings us to November 13th. The reason that I'm not happy with waiting for so long is because I don't want to have to move our stuff in the snow. I don't want the people who have offered to help us move and those we are MAKING help us move, to have to move us in the snow. I also do not want to have to rent a moving truck to move our stuff over. I don't want Ryan's mom to have to put up with all of our stuff sitting in her house for much longer, though it looks like that's what's going to have to happen. There's not much I can do though, except to tell Lyle that I'm going to be moving stuff in during the last weekend in October, no matter what. I'd rather move the stuff in slowly when it's not snowing than have to move everything in at once when it is snowing. We'll see how well that goes over.

Now that my little rant is over...there were a few good things that happened on Tuesday at the house:

Yep, the kitchen cupboards are in. And it sure makes everything look small. Anyone who looked at our plans and said we had a big kitchen, I would like them to come and take a look at it now. It is not big whatsoever. At first glance, the cupboards look fantastic, and from far away, they look fantastic. Once you get up close, however, you notice things...For instance, the doors do not line up properly, making the handles (pulls) seem like they are crooked. There are some large gaps between the doors, which aren't that big a deal, but still. Now we're not sure if they've already been adjusted, but if they have been, then they need to be adjusted again. They do look good though. I wasn't too sure about having oak cabinets, but they are beautiful with the dark stain on them.

Some words of advice if you're building a house and you're choosing your cabinets. If, like us, you get married and have a shower before you build your house, and for your shower you got plates, or went out and bought plates with money from your shower...make sure that they will fit into your kitchen cabinets. We have two different sets of plates, and when we were measuring the cabinets when we were at the house yesterday, we were worried that our plates would not fit into the cabinets. To try to take my mind off of not moving for another 5 weeks, we were also trying to figure out where we would put our stuff; cutlery, booze, etc. We were worried that we wouldn't be able to fit our booze into a smaller cabinet, and that we would have to use the cabinet above the wall oven...which is probably big enough that Ryan could fit into it. Those are things that should probably be thought of before the cabinets are installed...

When we got back home after going to the house, Ryan made me call Mom & Dad, and I got Dad to go downstairs and measure both of our plates, just to see if they would fit. Luckily, two of the four sets will fit...but the other two might not fit. The cupboard that we want to put the plates in is just over 11 1/2 inches deep, and the plate diameter is just over 11 1/2 inches...we might be in trouble there. Figuring out where those plates will go may be fun...

The laundry room/mudroom cabinets were also installed. The upstairs bathroom vanity was at the house, but had to be taken away because it didn't fit. I guess the guy measured wrong. Oh well. Not much we can do. He has to come back out anyway to install the cabinets above the fridge and to install another cabinet beside the sink in the kitchen.

The basement was also insulated. It makes a HUGE difference down there. There are no more echoes and everything just seems warmer. Hopefully on Wednesday they will be polying...

We had to go back to the house after supper so that we could take some dehumidifiers to dry the place out so that we can install the flooring (which I assume won't be happening until the weekend of the 19th now). We brought a bottle of booze back with us too, to see if it would fit into the cabinet...Ryan said it wouldn't fit...but it did. We plugged in the dehumidifiers and then left.

When we got home, we had 3 messages on the machine. Apparently people like to call when you're not home. One of the calls was from Dale the Stucco-er. He was returning my call, and wasn't sure what the 2P would look like...he said it could either look like the 1P, or the 3P, and that he wasn't sure where I was coming from, but to call him back. Didn't know where I was coming from? We told him that we wanted yellow stucco and a lighter trim. He said to look at those two houses, and then decide from there. We did, and called him with the decision, saying that the light was too light and the 3P was too yellow, and that we wanted a 2P. I think that's pretty clear...Anyway, I called him back, and then he said that 2P was probably going to be right where I wanted to be. I laughed and told him that I was sick of picking stucco colours, and he said that the 2P would likely be the colour that we were looking for (how he goes from "I don't know where you're coming from" to "that'll be right where you want the colour to be" is beyond me). He's been pretty good with us, and said that he'll probably be starting on the stucco Thursday or Friday afternoon. He thanked me for my patience (which I didn't really understand either...I should have been thanking him) and that was that. So barring any problems, by the weekend we should have the exterior of the house done.
